Create cultureWild time

Step by step

  1. Think about why you want more time in nature. You might want to notice the present moment, or get to know something in particular, like bird song or the changing seasons.
  2. Choose a day and time that works for you, such as once a day or once a week, and decide how long you will spend outside.
  3. Pick a way to remember your nature time, like a note on your phone, a mark in a diary, or a sticky note somewhere you will see it.
  4. Try linking your nature time to something you already do each day, such as your morning drink or a walk after a meal, so it is easier to remember.
  5. When your nature time comes, step outside or find a spot where you can see or hear nature. You could sit quietly, walk slowly, watch the sky, or simply notice what is happening around you.
  6. After a few weeks, think about how it is going and change the time, place or length if you need to.

Create cultureNature connectedness index

Step by step

  1. The Nature Connection Index was developed by the University of Derby's Nature Connectedness Research Group to measure how connected to nature a person feels.
  2. Find the six short statements in question thirty of Your Baseline, at the front of Wilding: Wisdom for a Wilder Life.
  3. Read each statement and score it from one, completely disagree, to seven, completely agree, going with your first honest response.
  4. Add up your six scores to give a total between six and forty two.
  5. Write down the total and the date.
  6. There is no pass mark, so treat the total as a private marker.
  7. Try the statements again after a season of practice and see whether anything has shifted.

Uncover nature's languageSensing bird language

Step by step

  1. As you spend time outside, listen for the baseline sounds of an area, the calm everyday chatter of birds, and notice when this changes into an alarm.
  2. Watch the body language of birds and other animals around you for clues as well as their sounds.
  3. Look out for ripples of disturbance moving through an area, sometimes called concentric rings, such as birds ahead of you falling silent or flying up in a wave as you approach.

Create cultureUnplug

Step by step

  1. Before you unplug, take a moment to think about why.
  2. Ask yourself why you want to be more present right now, and what you might notice if you are not looking at your phone for a while. Say this reason out loud or write it down.
  3. Find a peaceful place, ideally outside or somewhere you can see or hear nature. Quietly tell yourself that you are pausing the digital world to step into the real world.
  4. Put your phone on do not disturb or turn it off completely.
  5. When your chosen time is up, think about how it felt, what you noticed, and whether you felt any urge to check your phone.
  6. Turn your phone back on and keep track of how this feels over a week.
