A map begins in your head.
Using a drawn map or an Ordnance Survey map of an area you know, spend time internalising it by asking yourself questions, such as if I stood here, what would I reach if I wandered in that direction,
Think about why you want more time in nature.
Choose a tree with bark that has an interesting pattern and texture.
Think of a short phrase that captures how you feel about being outside in nature, such as your own version of a simple chant or song line.
Find a natural object nearby, such as a leaf, a piece of bark or a stone.
Knead a ball of clay until soft and pliable, working on a smooth surface such as a board or mat.
Find a stick or branch from a native tree or shrub that resonates with you, such as willow, hazel or cherry.
Choose one bird species, such as a blackbird, that is common near you, and commit to getting to know its voice well over time.
Find an area with plenty of animal sign and a scrubby spot where you can hide, ideally somewhere open enough that you can see anything approaching from any direction.
