FOOD FROM THE FIRE

Sourcing & preparing firewood.  Fire lighting & cooking with campfires.

During this day long experience we will deliberately slow our pace and identify trees whose properties are ideally suited to igniting fire and that create good hot embers that are suited to cooking and baking.  We will take some time to consider ways to obtain dry firewood and light fires during days when it is damp and windy.  Equipped with this knowledge and medium sized hand tools, including a small axe, we will respectfully gather and process the materials we will use for our cooking campfire.

We will light our special fire using a bow drill and coax the resulting ember into flame that we can add to our kindling and firewood.  We will then manage our fire it to create a glowing bed of embers and in combination with various traditional methods we will bake various flat & leavened breads & to cook other goodies over the campfire.

As our campfire creations sizzle, steam and rise we will take some time out to enjoy what the woodland offers us discovering what is meant by the natural community of a woodland and consider and how the various species and other elements work together collaboratively to support each other and their home.
