Uncover nature's language

What are the birds saying, and could you learn to listen?

Bird calls and movements tell you about the lives going on around you. Bird language starts with getting to know what's ordinary in a place, then noticing when something changes. You don't need to know every species: a familiar bird feeding, singing or suddenly going quiet and watchful is enough to raise a question.

Gradually a robin on the same perch becomes a neighbour whose habits you recognise. And because your own arrival can be part of the change, you learn to notice how you affect the birds as well as what they're doing.

Try this week

  • Listen to one familiar bird for five minutes.
  • Go back at the same time tomorrow and compare.
  • Notice which birds go quiet when you arrive.
