Each Practice Key is a simple, repeatable way of spending time with nature. Some will call to you straight away; others will make sense later. There is no right order.

Practice Key

Open your senses

What could your senses tell you if you slowed down and let them?

Most of us lean on our eyes and let the other senses go quiet under screens and background noise. This Key is about waking them up again: wide-angle owl vision, deer ears for listening, a slow sniff of the air, a hand on bark or the feel of wind on your face.

Picture a circle of awareness around you. Head down and distracted, it shrinks to arm's length and the bird overhead slips by. Open your senses and the circle widens, until the landscape feels less like scenery and more like company. You can't build a relationship with what you never notice.

Try this week

  • Cup your hands behind your ears and count the sounds you hear.
  • Soften your gaze and take in the whole scene at once.
  • Smell the ground after rain.
