Mammal communities & other wildlife that can be tracked

Get to know the fox and badger long before you ever see them.

A red fox standing in long grass above cottage roofs
A cloven deer slot pressed into mud
A large burrow entrance with a spoil heap under an ivy-covered bank

Foxes, badgers, deer, squirrels and mice can become familiar through their footprints, feeding signs, droppings, paths and homes long before you meet them. Birds and small creatures leave signs too; this community is about a way of knowing rather than one group of animals.

A short line of tracks opens questions about movement, food, cover and timing. Coming back to those questions builds patience and focused curiosity. Start with what the sign actually shows, and let further clues strengthen the story. Watch setts and dens from a distance and never disturb them.
