Trees & woody plant communities

Oak, hazel, hawthorn and bramble: neighbours you can return to all year.

Clusters of white wild cherry blossom
Hanging bunches of green ash keys
A lichen-covered hawthorn branch with new leaves and flower buds

This community takes in shrubs and woody climbers as well as tall trees, so a pavement hedge can be as good a beginning as a wood. Buds, leaves, bark, fruit and visiting creatures give you reasons to come back through the year. One oak supports insects, birds and mammals, and its fallen leaves and rotting wood belong to the story too.

Getting to know trees often leads to useful materials and a growing sense of resourcefulness. Care for the tree, and everything else that depends on it, belongs alongside that learning.
